Fort Moultrie and Fort Sumter – Charleston, SC
~1 hr. from McCord’s Ferry at Lake Marion
While peace is now known in the Holy City, two forts continue to stand guard over the Charleston Harbor. The first, a palmetto log stronghold called Fort Moultrie, played an instrumental role in the birth of our nation when stationed Patriots defeated the Royal Navy there in 1776. As a matter of fact, the Palmetto Tree that adorns our South Carolina state flag is a tribute to that battle, as the cannon balls of the British bounced off the Palmetto logs which was a major factor in the success of the battle for the Patriots. Then, in 1861, Confederate shots fired from Fort Sumter would ignite the Civil War. The U.S. National Parks Service now protects and maintains these two forts.
