Santee Trail

Trail Type: Loop Trail

Length: 7.8 miles

Completion Time: 2 hrs. 21 mins.

Located in neighboring Santee State Park, this mostly level and well-marked trail is popular in the area for hiking and mountain biking. The Santee Trail bike loop offers shade via tree cover, which certainly comes in handy during the warmer summer months. Travelers of this trail will enjoy Lake Marion views along their journey. As with all trails on this list, bug spray is recommended. 

Santee Trail is located just seven minutes from McCord’s Ferry at Lake Marion.

Limestone Nature Trail

Trail Type: Loop Trail

Length: 1 mile

Completion Time: ~20 mins.

As the second Santee State Park nature trail on our list, the Limestone Nature Trail is a much shorter path but perfect for a relaxing stroll. This loop trail offers more pristine lake views and a bridge overlook. The length of this path is filled with beautiful Santee nature. Onsite parking is available, with a park entry fee of $3 per person.

Limestone Nature Trail is located just eight minutes from McCord’s Ferry at Lake Marion.

Palmetto Trail: Wateree Passage

Trail Type: Out-And-Back Trail

Length: 11.6 miles

Completion Time: 3 hrs. 38 mins.

The Palmetto Trail: Wateree Passage may seem daunting at first, but this beautiful hike can be split into shorter segments with entry points at Foxville Road and Campbell Creek Road, with the complete hike ending (or beginning) at Poinsett State Park. Travelers of the Wateree Passage not only experience a wide range of terrain (including swamps, hills, forests, rivers and bridges) but are lucky to travel Manchester State Forest and the old South Carolina Rail Road through which the trail runs.

Palmetto Trail: Wateree Passage is located just 30 minutes from McCord’s Ferry at Lake Marion.

Whippoorwill Trail

Trail Type: Out-And-Back Trail

Length: 7.1 miles

Completion Time: 2 hrs. 22 mins.

Located near Wedgefield, SC, just over an hour from McCord’s Ferry’s lakefront community, the Whippoorwill Trail provides hikers and bikers with a lengthy yet easy walk through the woods. This trail lies adjacent to other great paths in the area, which can be spliced to extend your adventure.

Kingsnake Trail

Trail Type: Out-And-Back Trail

Length: 7.1 miles

Completion Time: 2 hrs. 22 mins.

Immerse yourself in the beauty of Congaree National Park (located just 18 miles southeast of Columbia)! Kingsnake Trail is an out-and-back hike perfect for nature lovers looking to spot local wildlife, including deer, raccoons, opossums and more. This shaded trail passes through a stunning cypress-tupelo slough and is home to impressive cherry bark oaks. Those organizing their trip are in for a treat but should plan to travel during dryer weather as the path can become muddy during wetter days.
